Lake Elementaita is one of the Great Rift Valley’s quietest treasures. Set roughly 120 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, this shallow soda lake is part of the UNESCO-listed Kenya Lake System, a landscape of pale shores, volcanic hills and skies filled with birdlife. It is a place made for slowing down, whether you are pairing it with a Masai Mara safari or spending a long weekend away from the city.

Where to Stay at Lake Elementaita

Accommodation around the lake is small in scale and rich in setting, with lodges and camps that look out over water, acacia and open plains.

  • Serena Elementaita Camp: a lakeside camp with refined tented comfort and views across the water.
  • Lake Elementaita Mountain Lodge: a hillside retreat with wide, sweeping views over the lake.
  • Sentrim Elementaita: garden-view cottages that suit families and relaxed group stays.
  • Sawela Capella Lodge: a contemporary lodge for guests who want space, privacy and calm.

Each property offers a different pace and style, and we will match the right one to your travel plans.

Things to Do Around Lake Elementaita

Birdwatching. The alkaline waters draw flamingos, great white pelicans and a wide variety of waterfowl. Early morning is the best time, when the light is soft and the shoreline is at its quietest.

Soysambu Conservancy. This private wildlife conservancy neighbours the lake and is home to zebra, giraffe, buffalo and antelope. Game drives and guided walks here feel unhurried and uncrowded.

Kariandusi Prehistoric Site. Explore one of East Africa’s important early human sites, where stone tools tell a story stretching back hundreds of thousands of years.

Hot springs and nature walks. The surrounding countryside is ideal for gentle walks, sundowners on the lodge terrace and quiet time outdoors.

Getting to Lake Elementaita

Lake Elementaita is about a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive from Nairobi via the Nairobi–Nakuru highway, depending on traffic. It sits between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru, so it combines easily with both. It also works well as a restful first or last stop on a longer Kenya itinerary.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Elementaita can be enjoyed year-round. The dry months from June to October and January to February offer clearer skies and easier wildlife viewing. The green season brings lush scenery, fewer visitors and excellent birding.
